So, I know I have very few followers, but this is worth a shot. Please reblog if you see this!

This week is Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week. Most of you probably don’t know what Mito is, and that is precisely where I step in. Mitochondrial Disease is a disorder where the mitochondria within the cells are dysfunctional. The mitochondria produce more than 90% of the body’s energy, so what happens when they dysfunction? Well, the most common effects are fatigue, muscle weakness, and in extreme cases, organ failure. This disease destroys patients’ bodies, and there’s nothing that can stop it. Mito is progressive, it’s chronic, there’s no cure, and there’s no current treatment. All the doctor’s can do is treat the symptoms and try to give the body the supplements it needs to survive, usually through oral medication, feeding tubes, or IVs. A perfectly normal baby can turn into a teenager who is constantly on tube feedings, and that’s just the reality of this disorder. So please, if you have the time, look into it. It would be lovely if you joined us in the walk towards a cure.
